THE WEEK IN REVIEW

We hope all who celebrate enjoyed a festive Passover and Easter!

Thank you to all who helped us brainstorm a new format for our unBox Team Calls moving forward. We have decided to move the calls to bi-weekly, to help ensure meetings are the most generative, active, and engaging. We will also be experimenting with a new format, with featured presentations spotlighting the work of our unBox student and recent graduate members, and our advisors, partners, and visiting guests!

This Friday, we'll meet for our Team Call at 9 am PST/12 pm EST. Then, we will meet every other week! (After Friday 4/9, we'll meet 4/23). The 4/23 presentation will be announced in the next newsletter, which will now be bi-weekly.

Click this link to add the bi-weekly invitation to your calendar.

unBox Team Spotlights:

  • unBox was accepted to present at the Within Reach: Zero Hunger conference (4/12 - 4/15)! Register to see Angelina Polselli's flash talk, and unBox advisor Ertharin Cousin's ending keynote speech!
  • unBox has begun writing blog posts for partner FTS Solutions' website! Read our posts on the SNAP program and WIC program - what they are, how they work, and their transformative anti-hunger impacts.
Policy Spotlight - H.R. 1919:
  • The issue: College student SNAP eligibility expanded in December 2020! Before, in addition to income guidelines and other requirements, students had to meet one of several restrictive exemptions, the most common being a work requirement of over 20 hours per week, to be eligible for SNAP. Now, until 30 days after the COVID-19 health crisis is declared over, all students meeting basic income and other eligibility guidelines and who are eligible for federal or state work-study or with an Expected Family Contribution of $0 are eligible to apply for SNAP! In California, this means 2 in 5 college students are eligible. If you're a current college student considering SNAP, there's time to apply! If you're a campus organizer, staff member, faculty member, or engaged campus community member, get the word out!
  • The bill: H.R. 1919 (Reps. Gomez, Harder,  Panetta, introduced 3/16/21) would extend college student SNAP flexibilities beyond the pandemic. In California, this would make over 300,000 students newly eligible for SNAP! Track the bill here!
Stay plugged in:
  • unBox member Lila Mack helped coordinate the Rathbun Activism Summit, featuring student activism and organizing in the areas of climate change, environmental justice, social equity, and mass incarceration. Catch the last of today's events and check back for recordings!

As always, we invite you to our Friday Team Calls, from 9 - 10 AM PT/ 12 - 1 PM ET. Join here:
