Policy Spotlight - CA SB 364:

  • The issue: Before COVID-19, over two million CA children were experiencing food insecurity. Now, rates have skyrocketed, hitting communities of color the hardest, with Black and Latinx families with children reporting food insecurity twice that of white households. The USDA's free school meals will expire after the 2021-22 school year.
  • The bill: CA Senator Nancy Skinner’s “Free School Meals for All Act of 2021” could revolutionize school food. The bill would:
    • permanently provide free school meals to all CA K-12 students
    • support school districts in providing freshly prepared meals using CA ingredients
    • provide EBT benefits during school breaks and disasters
