Tomorrow's Call Agenda:

  • FEATURED PRESENTATION: Angelina is a recent graduate from University of San Francisco with a major in Politics and minor in Public Service and Community Engagement, and is unBox's Policy Team Lead. She has spent her time studying the ways the personal can and has become political while also engaging in direct action across California. While the future is uncertain, Angelina is determined to keep pursuing her passion for politics and most importantly doing so with a community. Angelina, on her share-out:
"The presentation is going to be a brief, but hopefully useful crash course on LGBTQ+ history and intersections. From discussing the beginning stages of what we now know as Pride to addressing the current disparities between LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+ people, I hope this serves as a useful presentation for understanding the current state of LGBTQ+ inclusion. While Supreme Court victories and increasing social support may illustrate progress, there is still much to be done to truly support and uplift the LGBTQ+ community"
  • Policy Spotlight on CA AB 558 + actions!
  • Advisor updates
  • SAVE THE DATE FOR OUR NEXT CALL JULY 16: Join for agroecology and food system activist and unBox Advisor Conrad Schmidt's presentation about his ongoing Stanford University Teaching Gardens workshop series in which he uses growing food as a nexus for exploring topics such as urban sustainable gardening and farming, the cultural importance of food historically, the evolution of modern agricultural principles and practices and what the future of agriculture might look like, and how to best address food insecurity and seek food justice at the community level.
~Wait, everyone~
Please mentally cue the song "We Are the Champions" as you read the following:
This week, the California legislature passed a state budget that includes:
  • Food4All - food assistance for undocumented immigrants!
  • School Meals for All - universal K-12 school meals!
  • Health4All - Medi-Cal for undocumented immigrants meeting income guidelines age 50+!
  • Robust affordable housing, benefits, education, and healthcare support.

We celebrate these wins with optimism and gratitude for the leadership of Senator Melissa Hurtado, Senator Nancy Skinner, CA Immigrant Policy Center, California Association of Food Banks, the Center for Ecoliteracy, Nourish CA, Governor Gavin Newsom, and countless others!!
While we're celebrating: CA AB 832 extended CA's eviction moratorium until September 30!! For the rest of the country, it has been extended to July 31.

Policy Spotlight - CA AB 558:

  • The bill: AB 558 would establish the California School Plant-Based Food and Beverage Program, increasing access to plant-based food and the visibility of these environmentally-friendly food options. Schools would be allowed to request reimbursement of up to $0.10 and $0.20 cents per meal that includes a plant-based milk or food option, respectively.
  • Why care? This bill would incentivize schools to offer plant-based options, allowing school meals to accommodate different lifestyles, dietary needs, religions and/or cultures, and provide those facing food insecurity with the same dignity of food choices. Everyone deserves access to quality, nutritious food, and for many who subscribe to non-mainstream diets or belief systems, such food might not include meat or dairy products.
