Tomorrow's Call Agenda:

  • FEATURED PRESENTATION: unBox advisor Christine Johnson will share out on her career-long work to improve nutrition and health equity on both US coasts, and internationally! Christine was previously Assistant Commissioner at the NYC Health Department, where she oversaw the agency's work related to food policy, active design, and tobacco control. Prior to that role, she led the nutrition work at the Department, including working on the restriction of trans fat in NYC restaurants and creating nutrition standards for all NYC agencies. For the past five years, Christine has been working with Vital Strategies, consulting on food policy projects for cities around the world and advising on global nutrition projects for the World Health Organization. Christine is also co-leading a project to increase the impact of food and nutrition policy graduates at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She has a MBA from Stanford's Graduate School of Business.

Policy Spotlight - CA AB 368:

  • The bill: AB 368 could help transform medical treatment and prevention. It would establish three pilot programs in Fresno, Alameda, and San Bernardino. In each county 250 Medi-Cal beneficiaries with chronic health conditions would be accepted to participate and receive a “food prescription” benefit. The benefit would facilitate patients’ access to nutritious food through a healthcare provider’s prescription. This program would be implemented in January 2022 and involve an evaluation. The California Association of Food Banks, SPUR, and ALL IN Alameda County support AB 368.

  • Why care? Food can be preventive medicine for diabetes, hypertension, and depression. AB 368's pilots would not only empower food security, but help tackle historic and unjust health disparities amongst Hispanics, African Americans, and disabled Americans.
  • Actions: CA residents can find your reps with unBox's Linktree! Email them about AB 368 by copying our Policy Spotlight! Like us on Twitter + IG!

Actions:
CA State Bills:

  • 2 weeks ago YOU spoke up about AB 543 - which would make sharing CalFresh info a part of CA community college, state university, and (voluntarily) UC campus orientations. This week, it was re-read, amended, and referred back to Appropriations! Continue to call, email, and Tweet CA representatives!
  • Raise your voice on AB 368! Read on for actions!
  • AB 221 - Emergency Food4All, which would establish a one-time fund to provide emergency food assistance for those impacted by COVID-19, regardless of legal status - didn't make it into the Budget. Sign on to this letter from the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights LA to add your organization in support, and receive action items for supporting before and during its hearing June 22.

CA Budget Asks:
(The CA state budget is taking longer than usual (here's why). A new draft, AB 128, was completed on June 14, but Governor Newsom hasn't finalized it, it differs from the legislature's May Revise, and negotiations continue. Keep advocating that key provisions stay!) Federal Bills:
