Happy Valentine's Day!

February is Black Liberation Month

“Down where we are, food is used as a political weapon.”
Fannie Lou Hamer

In a recent Civil Eats piece, Dr. Ashanté M. Reese (UT Austin) and Randolph Carr (National Black Food and Justice Alliance organizer) ask 4 other food justice leaders:

"What does an abolitionist approach to food systems change sound and look like?"

The six activists' reflections on the prison industrial complex and criminalization  which build on Dr. Reese's and Carr's 2020 op-ed Overthrowing the Food System’s Plantation Paradigm  "teach us about how to liberate the food system and ourselves".

Food4All:

  • unBox is a proud signer of the Food4All sign-on letter circulated by Nourish California and CA Immigrant Policy Center, urging Gavin Newsom to expand state-funded CalFresh coverage to all eligible immigrants, regardless of their immigration status. Governor Newsom has already expanded this program to cover all immigrants 55 and up—we're pushing for full coverage!
  • February 24, 10 am - 11 am PST: Register for the Food4All listening session with CDSS
Universal School Meals:
  • unBox joined over 2,000 organizations in a FRAC sign-on letter urging Congress to extend COVID-19-era child nutrition waivers to fuel school meals beyond the waiver expiration date of June 30, 2022.
